21st-Jun-2008 10:44 am - Hepburn rocks but Tracy...WOW!
spinal tap
ok, so this morning i decided to dust off one of my old tracy/hepburn video tapes and watched pat and mike.  i'm a katharine hepburn fan bordering on obsessive.  the woman's work is absolutely amazing.  when you watch her first film (morning glory) and then watch later films you can see how much she progressed and how talented she really was.  and this film is no exception because in it her character is a PE teacher who turns pro.  and hepburn does all of the sports scenes with the pros herself (she was a jr olympic ice skater and very accomplished tennis player and golfer).  watching her play with the pros in these scenes will blow you away.

but the thing is that no matter how great hepburn is there is still spencer tracy who, in my opinion, is the greatest actor in american film history. his performances are so complicatedly simplistic.  he just "is" the character.  he's so natural in his performances yet nothing is lost (*cough*brando's mumbling through several roles*cough*).  he understands his job is a performance that we can see and hear.  the best thing about tracy's performances is that you cannot mimic them.  you see current performers and comedians do all sorts of takes on the greats but you will never see a take on tracy because no one can pull it off.

typical syrupy disney fair about a young girl who comes to live with the father who never knew she existed. completely predictable with your standard disney ending. but...it was cute! daughter meets father, father takes in daughter, daughter's lying about mom's location, daughter causes upheaval in father's life, father hurts daughter's feelings and makes it up by enrolling her in a great ballet school. father ends up taking part in the ballet recital (the rock in man tights is a lovely sight). daughter leaves father thinking it is for the best. and yet, they still end up living happily ever after.

like i said, typical disney fair. you'll laugh, you'll smile, you'll go "awe."
1st-Jan-2008 10:58 pm - new year new lj?
spinal tap

well as we start 2008 i'm still looking for a direction for my lj.  so far it's kinda random i know but i'll find a focus within the next month i think.

my goals for 2008:
*keep growing the love with the bf.  we have a huge adjustment ahead of us at the end of feb when he moves in.  two people in their mid-30s who've never had a live-in relationship before.  it's a good thing we are compatible.

*find that elusive job that i know is waiting for me.  all i want is a job that pays decent, has benefits and allows me to do theatre.  oh wait, i do want something else, a job that pays on time and without the payroll check bouncing.

*buy the house.  yeppers, teh bf and i have decided to make an offer on our home.  keep your fingers crossed

*for my car to need no more than regular tune-ups and fluid changes for the next 12 months

*to respect myself.  that means losing weight, exercising, learning to tell others no instead of yes, taking care of myself

*to finally write that original short story.  yes, i know i'm behind on my smut.  i'll give you some eventually, i promise.

*to win a major lottery or else the pch $5k/week for life sweepstakes (well somebody has to win)

my oldest nephew is a trip.  he's extremely smart and has a very dry wit beyond his years.  he is one of those people who, when they laugh, laughs with his whole body.  truly a joy.

a little history first...since he has my sense of humor he's very fond of pranks.  he loves to pull pranks.  on the last day of school last spring i went by on my way to work.  he was pacing the house shaking a can of ginger ale in order to "prepare for the day."  the soda was for his teacher (btw, she got him with a cream pie to the face the same day).  last christmas he wrapped my small ornament in a large box inside a larger box and wrapped it with a full roll of duct tape.

fast forward to this christmas...i thought i'd pay him back and wrap his gift in a lot of duct tape.  no biggie.  he laughed when he saw the package and just set it under the tree.  he was playing santa and he gave me my gift from him first.  the gift was wrapped in a long, large box.  i opened it and it was filled with newspapers that has been crumpled up.  i thought it would be another small gift.  i began going thru the newspapers one by one, never finding anything.  he kept chiming in to be careful and not tear up my gift.  so i finally get to the last newspaper and find NOTHING!  i look at him and give him a "haha," thinking he gave me nothing.  but no, not this kid.  he had wrapped an air guitar for me!

how the hell am i going to top this?
